‘Scéal na Gaeilge’ Scoops Award at the Celtic Media Festival

Scéal na Gaeilge (The Story of Irish), a 2 part documentary series which traces the journey of the Irish language from earliest times to the present day, took the award for Best Factual Entertainment at the Celtic Media Festival.

Through a mixture of animation, green screen and location filming, this series reveals the history of the Irish language by shining a humourous light on the historical and mythological stories that are associated with it.

Fun, fresh and frisky, Scéal na Gaeilge is presented and written by Alan Titley, directed by Diarmuid Goggins and produced by Ciarán Ó Cofaigh for ROSG.

The prestigious Celtic Media Festival is an annual celebration of the best of film, television, radio and digital media from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and the Isle of Man. The event, which this year took place in Swansea, promotes the richness of Celtic heritage, language and culture.

Competition is always fierce at the festival with applicants from all the major broadcasters and production companies from Ireland, Britain and France and programs produced in Gaelic, Irish, Cornish, Breton, Manx, French, and English.

Ciarán Ó Cofaigh, the producer of Scéal na Gaeilge, says:

“It’s great to win a prize at a major international festival like this. In my opinion, we’re obliged to find new ways to present documentary programmes in a visual, energetic and fun way. We believe that we have proven that any subject matter can be presented in an entertaining humorous style to all age groups.”

Scéal na Gaeilge has already won the Oireachtas Media Award for best TV series and has been nominated for the IFTA awards.

Scéal na Gaeilge was funded by TG4, The BAI, Foras na Gaeilge and ROSG.
