Competition: Win The Beatles: Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years on DVD

beatles-2d-digi-dvd

The Beatles: Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years is out on DVD, Blu-ray and 2 Disc Special Edition now.

In The Beatles: Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years, Oscar®-winning director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13) explores the history of The Beatles through the lens of the group’s concert performances, from their early days playing small clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg to their unprecedented world tours in packed stadiums around the globe, from New York to Melbourne to Tokyo. Available now for pre-order, the acclaimed film will be released on Digital Download, Blu-Ray and DVD, plus 2 Disc Special Edition on both formats from 21st November, courtesy of STUDIOCANAL and Polygram Entertainment.

The film is produced with the full cooperation of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison. White Horse Pictures’ Grammy Award®-winning Nigel Sinclair, Scott Pascucci and Academy Award®-winner and Emmy® Award-winner Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment are producing with Howard. Apple Corps Ltd.’s Jeff Jones and Jonathan Clyde are serving as executive producers, along with Imagine’s Michael Rosenberg and White Horse’s Guy East and Nicholas Ferrall.

After their legendary North American television debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1964, The Beatles transfixed the U.S. and the tremors were felt worldwide, transforming music and pop culture forever with their records and television appearances. The Beatles’ extraordinary musicianship and charisma also made them one of the greatest live bands of all time. The first feature-length documentary authorized by The Beatles since the band’s breakup in 1970, Eight Days A Week features rare and never-before-seen archival footage of shows and interviews, plus new interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and numerous prominent observers. The film captures the exhilaration of The Beatles’ phenomenal rise to fame as well as the toll it eventually took on the band members, prompting them to stop touring altogether in August 1966 and devote their prodigious musical energy to the series of ground-breaking studio recordings for which they are best known today.

Featuring a wealth of specially created supplementary material totalling 100 minutes of extras, the deluxe home entertainment editions contain exclusively created featurettes for fans to delve even deeper into the band’s world. Accompanying these are stunning, fully restored full length performances of some of the band’s most iconic tracks including “Twist and Shout” and “She Loves You” recorded at the ABC Theatre, Manchester in 1963 and “Can’t Buy Me Love” at the NME Awards, 1964, in London, bringing the experience of seeing The Beatles in concert fully to life for all fans.

We have 2 DVDs to give away. To be in with a chance of winning, please email filmireland@gmail.com with “The Beatles” as the subject line.

Competition: Win Tickets to ‎John Boorman with Declan Power in Conversation with Seán Rocks

14910394_1460124794005186_2552477442899628005_n
This Friday, 11th November, spend an animated evening with RTÉ Radio 1 Arena cultural guru Seán Rocks and John Boorman, a filmmaker best known for his feature films Deliverance, Hope and Glory, The General, Queen and Country and more. The Oscar-nominated director’s debut novel, Crime of Passion (Liberties Press), is a strangely uplifting black comedy about a fictional director recovering from a failed movie. Boorman was originally approached to write a book about how to make a successful film. He started doing so – but the result struck him as dull and technical. He decided to tell the story another way: in the form of a novel. The cinematic book is the result, proving that solid storytelling transcends all mediums. Declan Power discusses the genesis of his book Siege at Jadotville (Maverick House), a captivating military account of Irish troops’ heroism against-all-odds in the Congo. Power’s long journey to achieve recognition for the veterans of Jadotville has culminated in his book’s adaptation to film as one of the biggest releases of the year by Netflix.

Thanks to our friends at The Dublin Book Festival, we have a pair of tickets to give away.

To be in with a chance of winning email filmireland@gmail.com with Boorman in the subject line.

The Sundance-winning documentary The Land of The Enlightened will be released in the Irish Film Institute on Friday 11th November.  The film’s director Pieter-Jan De Pue will fly into Dublin for a special opening night screening in the IFI where he will take part in a Q&A.

The visually stunning documentary, which won the Special Jury Award for Cinematography (Documentary) at the world renowned Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, charts the complex Afghani war economy told through the eyes of the children who have found themselves caught up in the on-going American occupation.

A gang of Afghan kids from the Kuchi tribe dig out old Soviet mines and sell the explosives to children working in a lapis lazuli mine. When not dreaming of the time when American troops finally withdraw from their land, another gang of children keeps tight control on the caravans smuggling the blue gemstones through the arid mountains of Pamir.

The co-production was produced by Morgan Bushe for Irish production company Fastnet Films (with funding from the Irish Film Board) together with Savage Film, Submarine, Eyeworks and Gerbrueder Beetz Produktion.

Competition: Win Tickets to ‘We Are Moving – Memories of Miss Moriarty’ @ ADIFF

MissMoriarty-MED

We Are Moving – Memories of Miss Moriarty is an intimate portrait of Joan Denise Moriarty, a visionary who overcame enormous odds by doggedly following her dream of bringing ballet to every corner of Ireland. A pioneer of early 20th century Irish dance, Joan Denise Moriarty dared to create a uniquely Irish form of ballet inspired by her love of nature and Irish folklore. Her life’s work has been largely overlooked since her death. A divisive figure, she was accused of fabricating her professional dance training and of misrepresenting herself as a vanguard of Irish ballet. Her personal life has also been subject to much scrutiny over the years and remains a contentious issue for those who knew her. Despite such controversies, Joan Denise Moriarty has left behind a remarkable legacy of dancers and dance lovers who may never have found ballet without her influence. This is a celebration of Joan Denise the artist, the dancer, and the woman who was best known, loathed, and loved as Miss Moriarty.

Competition: Win Tickets to ‘Further Beyond’ @ ADIFF

2694-Further_Beyond_large

In Further Beyond, Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor take as their point of departure the compelling 18th Century figure, Ambrose O’Higgins, and attempt to retrace his remarkable journey from Ireland to Chile. Key locations in O’Higgins’ life – a lake in Sligo, a field in Meath, the port of Cadiz, the sea, and the edge of a snow-covered mountain in the Andes – are visited and reflected upon in the hope that something might be revealed, as if these very locations might contain clues.  Having long dreamt of making a biopic of O’Higgins, this wayward and wry documentary is the filmmakers’ attempt to realise this dream through a personal voyage into the idea of the cinematic location.  However, as they speculate on the idea of place and what O’Higgins embodies, the filmmakers continually get sidetracked by a competing story of immigration and displacement. Gradually, and not without humour, these intertwining narratives uncover ideas about the transformative powers of travelling, as looked at through the peculiar prism of the Irish experience. (Filmmakers’ statement).

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

The film is the almost unbelievable tale of a young man from Cork who trained in UCC (Dr Aidan MacCarthy) and survived some of the most harrowing episodes of World War II (including the atomic bombing of Nagasaki), and his family’s search to uncover the origin of the Japanese Samurai sword which he brought home, and which now resides in MacCarthy’s Bar in Castletownbere.

Dr Aidan MacCarthy stands as one of the most incredible survivors of World War II. He survived Dunkirk and was later captured by the Japanese in Java, he spent almost four years as a prisoner of war and was less than a mile from the epicentre of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki.

He was the first non-Japanese doctor to assist civilians in the aftermath of the atomic bomb and when Japan surrendered Aidan was given a Samurai sword by the camp commandant – be the reason was shrouded in mystery for almost 70 years. Aidan’s daughter Nicola travels to Japan in an attempt to discover the origin of the ancestral sword. On her journey Nicola discovers much more about her father’s incredible story and about the war from both the Allied and Japanese sides. Recreated through animation, interviews and archive with a full orchestral score, this is a story of forgiveness and humanity at its highest level.

Competition: Win Tickets to ‘Orion: The Man Who Would be King’ @ IFI Doc Festival

Orion01_Sun_Records

The annual IFI Documentary Festival (23 – 27 September) is back once again and will screen 14 feature length documentaries (with one world premiere and ten Irish premieres) and welcomes a host of special guest filmmakers from Ireland and abroad, alongside a series of special events.

This year’s festival includes the premiere of Jeanie Finlay’s Orion: The Man Who Would be King. Struggling musician Jimmy Ellis was regularly dismissed by record companies for sounding too much like Elvis. Soon after August 16, 1977, Sun Records signed Ellis as Orion, who performed in a garish mask and fuelled rumours that The King might not be dead after all. Orion recorded 11 albums and was a live draw, but Ellis’ hard-won fame wasn’t what he imagined. Consummate filmmaker Jeanie Finlay (The Great Hip Hop Hoax) rescues another great story from rock ‘n’ roll’s annals, celebrating the life of a previously unheralded man of mystery. There will be a post-screening Q&A with director Jeanie Finlay.

Thanks to our doc-loving friends at the IFI, we have 2 pairs of tickets to give away to the film, screening on Saturday, 26 th September at 9.30pm.

To be in with a chance of winning yourself a pair of tickets, answer the following question:

Name one Irish documentary featured at this year’s festival?

Email your answer to filmireland@gmail.com by lunchtime on Monday, 21st September when a holographic Film Ireland Hat will sing a duet with Michael Bublé and pick winners.

The 2015  IFI Documentary Festival takes place 23 – 27 September
