Kimberly Reyes sends us on news of the nominations for the 80th Golden Globes.

The nominations for the 80th Golden Globes took place this morning at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The nominations were announced by Mayan Lopez and Selenis Leyva of the NBC comedy series Lopez vs. Lopez, and Helen Hoehne, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

Categorized as a comedy, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin leads all films (and all categories) with 8 nominations. Forty-one performers were honoured with their first Golden Globe nominations, including Barry Keoghan, Domhnall Gleeson, and Kerry Condon, and father and son duo Brendan Gleeson and Domhnall Gleeson are both nominees.

Colin Farrell, who is nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, said in a press release: “What a team effort and a joy it was to bring The Banshees to life…to be able to celebrate with the whole gang like this and represent all the crew members who are watching at home, makes the whole thing all the sweeter!”

Returning to NBC after a year off due to Hollywood boycotts for lack of transparency and diversity in its voting ranks, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association instituted new members, new voters, and reforms. According to a statement released by the organization after the nominations:

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has answered the call for change by restructuring the organization in order to address institutional and systemic concerns. This has allowed the Association to increase diversity, transparency, and accountability on its journey of transformational change. These accomplishments are by no means final; they are fluid and adaptable. As the Association continues its work, it invites participation from its partners as an important component of this growth.

The nominees were selected by 96 members and, for the first time, 103 international voters. The Golden Globes voting body doubled in size with the 103 additional new voters recruited from international industry organizations. The new voters are composed of 22.3% Latinx, 13.6% Black, 11.7% Asian, 10.7% Middle Eastern, and 41.7% White, with 58.3% self-identifying as ethnically diverse. Geographically, the voters now represent 62 countries around the world.

Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the Awards which will take place on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at The Beverly Hilton and will stream on NBC and Peacock.
