First Cut! Youth Film Festival is an annual event dedicated to showcasing new films by young film makers from across Ireland and abroad.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2019, the Festival which will take place over four days from 6-9 March, offers screenings of short films by Ireland’s youths, workshops, and talks by film industry professionals in a friendly atmosphere where young filmmakers can meet and mingle with their peers. There’s also a primary schools animation programme, and YMVC, (the very successful Youth Music Video Competition), mentored by Brendan Canty, the Cork director who had a worldwide hit with his video for Hozier’s Take Me to Church.

The festival is based at the Mall Arts Centre in the seaside town of Youghal, Co. Cork and this year for the first time, screenings and events will also be held in the state-of-the-art Regal cinema, with the most up-to-date and advanced technology available.

Commenting Mary McGrath, Festival Director of First Cut! Youth Film Festival, said, “The Festival aims to inspire creativity and involvement in the arts in young people, and encourage film as a hobby or potential career. It’s about giving young people a voice and a chance to work in a medium they are very comfortable with and clearly enjoy. Many of young people we’ve worked with over the years have gone on to work in the industry. Film is a powerful tool for self-expression. Last year we showcased an incredible selection of short film entries from all over Ireland and Internationally – comedies, music videos, dramas, documentaries and some remarkable animations, it’s amazing to see the talent out there. A free festival like this provides access and opportunity ”

“ At First Cut! young filmmakers can gather together in a vibrant festival atmosphere for a rare chance to network and showcase their work. They can also take part in events and discussion panels hosted by film experts and receive feedback on their film. It’s a fantastic opportunity for everyone- it can inspire and motivate… not everyone’s going to be an Oscar-winner, but who knows?”

Each screening is accompanied by a panel discussion with young filmmakers where young people can share their experiences and take inspiration from their peers, who have a similar passion for making films.

First Cut! Youth Film Festival receives core funding from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Cork County Council and is supported by the business community in Youghal and by Cork Film Centre.
