Let’s Dance!

Global project
DANCE! The NELKEN-Line
comes to Ireland January-May 2017

Dublin Dance Festival is inviting everyone to dance one the most famous dance sequences ever created by iconic German choreographer Pina Bausch: the “Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter” line from her 1982 piece NELKEN, as part of a global project by the Pina Bausch Foundation and ARTE, the European culture channel.

Old and young, professionals and amateurs from all over the world, everyone is welcome to DANCE! The NELKEN-Line. With just a few simple, repeated gestures, the “NELKEN-Line” describes the alternation of the four seasons, and is performed by dancers walking in a long queue to Louis Armstrong’s wonderful 1928 recording of West End Blues.

As part of this global project, Dublin Dance Festival is encouraging groups across Ireland to perform their own “lines” from January – May 2017 and send a short video to the Pina Bausch Foundation to be uploaded to the ARTE website. Participants can choose to dance with friends, family, colleagues, in a club or youth group, a school class or even with total strangers. No dance experience is necessary! A NELKEN-Line can be done anywhere – in a living room, on the beach, in school, in a forest, at the office – the possibilities are endless!

Participating groups will also be invited to join the biggest NELKEN-Line in Ireland during the Dublin Dance Festival in May 2017. The first Irish NELKEN-Line has just been filmed at Dance House featuring members of Ireland’s dance community, and can now be seen on ARTE here.

Benjamin Perchet, Dublin Dance Festival Director, says, “We’re delighted to be bringing this fantastic international project to Dublin, and we’re looking forward to gathering all kinds of groups from across Ireland. The NELKEN-Line will highlight the joy of experiencing together a simple, signature choreography from one of the world’s most influential choreographers. Dublin Dance Festival is embracing the idea of pleasure in contemporary work. Every single person’s energy and creativity is welcome in this long-term and poetic project.”
