It all started as a simple idea: Terminator meets Lost. Soon the idea became a best-selling Graphic Novel, followed by a YouTube webseries with over 1.5 million views, two mobile games and a feature film directed by Jason Butler (shot in Dublin and Kildare). This is the world of Collider – a new sci-fi franchise set to hit Irish cinemas on January 10th.
beActive started off in 2003 with the multi-platform hit series Sofia’s Diary. Their recent TV & Film co-productions include; Sofia’s Diary UK and Sofia’s Diary China for Sony Pictures Television, HBO Canada primetime series The Line and Living In Your Car, Emmy-nominated Brazilian mini-series Final Punishment, the two time New York KidScreen award-winning drama series Aisling’s Diary. In addition, the company also released its first foray into UK Cinemas in 2012 The Knot released in the UK via Universal, featuring Mena Suvari & Noel Clark as well as indie Beat Girl, directed by Mairtin de Barra, which was released in cinemas and on VOD in the UK, Ireland and Portugal earlier this year.
Director Jason Butler has worked on four series of RTÉ 2′s flagship comedy show Republic Of Telly, writing, directing and editing the show’s comedy sketches. Many of which have gone viral including those with Damo and Ivor (Driving – 400,000 views), ‘Rubberbandits’ (Shift Girls – 950,000 views) and the Republic of Telly Orchestra (1.3 million views). He directed beActive’s sci-fi feature film Collider (2013) released on the 10th of January and has written and directed several successful short films including Tufty, which has screened on Irish and French national TV and in many international film festivals including Clermont-Ferrand, Sitges Horror Festival, Santiago De Compostela and Berlin. Jason has won numerous awards including Best New Director Award at Kinsale Sharks (2009), Best Direction Award at Fastnet Film Festival (2010) and the Screen International Oscar Moore Award for New European Screenwriting – Europe’s largest screenplay award (2002). Most recently he was co-nominated for a Writers Guild of Ireland Zebbie award for Best Television Script for Republic of Telly Series 7 episode 9. He graduated from the National Film School with a B.A.(Hons) in Film and also holds an MSc in Multimedia from Trinity College, Dublin.
Panelists will include the team behind the making and marketing of Collider sharing their method and the mistakes they made along the way along with insight form other local practitioners, the scientific community, comic book artists and funding bodies.
