The Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival (Donegal & Derry 16 – 20 May)
Ireland’s most Northerly annual film festival is back for its 7th year, from May 16th to 20th the picturesque town of Malin, Donegal will be transformed into an intense melting pot of documentary film, lively debate and exceptional entertainment.
On top of a line-up that includes more than 15 Irish premieres of films by Oscar, Emmy and IFTA nominees, Guth Gafa will have live performances of International and Irish music combined with open air screenings of some top music documentaries .
One of the festivals highlights is the Irish premiere of Soundbreaker, a music documentary about Finland’s most dynamic and daring composer and accordionist, Kimmo Pohjonen, a musician who has been pushing the boundaries of the typically traditional musical instrument for over 30 years, by freewheeling effortlessly between genres and creating his own. Soundbreaker will be screened in Malin and Derry in partnership with Derry‐ Londonderry City of Culture . with a special live performance following the May 17th Derry screening.
Malin audiences will be treated to Inishowen’s finest with Kate O’Callaghan and the Henry Girls performing on Friday and Saturday night respectively. Multi instrumentalist, Jeremy Hickey and the lively The Balkan Alien Sound will play the later slot each night.
And the music doesn’t stop there. A giant LED screen on the Green in Malin Village is a new focal point of this year’s festival.
On Friday night, Madison Square Garden comes to Malin with the screening of Shut Up and Play The Hits. Viewers can dance in the open air to the music of LCD Soundsystem in this documentary about the final concert of this influential band at Madison Square Gardens. As a mellow alternative Saturday night’s out door screening will be the acclaimed I’m Your Man documentary on the life of legendary singer songwriter, Leonard Cohen.
