Bás Arto Leary

Bás Arto Leary

Following the success of the previous schemes, Síol and Údar, it has been announced that Scéal will be broadcast on TG4 this month. Scéal is a development scheme that offers talented new Irish-speaking writers/directors an opportunity to adapt a well-known story from Irish language literature or folklore towards a half hour short film. Chosen stories were adapted from Irish language short stories, poems, folklore and other work that represents the Irish tradition of storytelling.

Among the films is Bás Arto Leary (The Death of Arto Leary). Written by Manchán Magan and directed by Luke Mc Manus, Bás Arto Leary won the Imeall Audience Choice Award at this year’s Dingle International Film Festival.

The other films to be broadcast are, Eoinín, Seán T. Ó Meallaigh and Tom O’Sullivan; Páirtnéir (Partner), Ann Marie Flanagan and Colm Bairéad; Síle, Séamus Moran and Cathal Ó Cuaig; An Gadaí (The Thief), Medb Johnstone and Niall Fallon, and Dílseacht (Loyalty), Marion Ní Loingsigh and Brendan Murray.

12 short films have previously been produced for TG4 and the BAI under schemes, Síol and Údar. Scéal gave six writers and directors new works to develop under the tutelage of experts in both script writing and television directing. Through a series of project-based workshops, Scéal guided the writers and directors though each step, from the script right up to the production, which not only developed their skills but brought us six television dramas of high aesthetic and cultural value.

These six films will be broadcast on TG4 thoughout April and May, beginning with Bás Arto Leary on Wednesday the 24th April. The series will continue for six weeks.
