Concern inaugural International Women’s Day Film Festival

To mark International Women’s Day 2012, Concern Worldwide, Ireland’s largest humanitarian agency, and the Light House cinema are teaming up to co-host the first-ever International Women’s Day Film Festival at the Smithfield venue on 8th March.

Join us as to celebrate the valuable work of women around the world as International Woman’s Day highlights the progress women have made in their struggle for economic, social, cultural and political equality.

4.40 pm: The White Dress

The white dress is the story of a little girl on her communion day but unlike other little girls she is making her communion all on her own.

5.00 pm: Oranges and Sunshine

Oranges and Sunshine tells the true story of hundreds of thousands of children who were deported to Australia in the 1940s and 1950s by the British government, and the struggle of one woman to reclaim their identity.

6.45 pm: Music by Prudence

Music by Prudence tells a self-empowering story of one young woman’s struggle who, together with her band, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds and, in her own voice conveys to the world that disability does not mean inability.

7.20 pm: A If I Am Not There

As If I Am Not There is a story of a young woman from Sarajevo whose life is shattered the day a young soldier walks into her apartment and tells her to pack her things.

9.05 pm: Q&A session

9.20 pm: His & Hers

From kitchens, living rooms, and hallways across the Irish midlands, His & Hers delightfully combines observation and charm to tell a 90-year-old love story through the voices of 70 women.

10.45 pm: Q&A session

Tickets are available from the Light House Cinema box office ( at a cost of €20 for a daily ticket or €9 per feature film and 50% of the proceeds will go towards Women of Concern, supporting women’s projects in Bangladesh.
