Dublin-based screenwriter is Nicholl Fellowships semifinalist

Dublin based screenwriter Fergal Rock (On Our Way, Henry & Sunny) was named a semifinalist in this year’s Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Competition with his screenplay Calvin & Skye. Fergal’s script was one of 146 semifinalists selected from 7,251 entries. The Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting is an international screenwriting competition established to identify and encourage talented new screenwriters. Up to five $35,000 Fellowships are awarded annually. Previous winners include Destin Cretton (Short Term 12) in 2010.

 

A comic drama Calvin & Skye is a character driven story that charts an unlikely friendship between a hypochondriac and a terminally ill teenager. Praised by the competition for its “rich and complex storyline” the script has subsequently attracted interest from Literary Managers and Production Companies in the US.

 

Calvin & Skye previously won the BlueCat Screenplay Competition in 2011, as well as being named a semi-finalist in Francis Ford Coppola’s American Zoetrope Screenplay Contest (top 27 screenplays) the same year.

Fergal Rock, a Dublin-based writer/director (Henry & Sunny, Tom Waits Made Me Cry) has been named a semi-finalist in Francis Ford Coppola’s 9th annual American Zoetrope Screenplay Contest with his screenplay Calvin & Skye. The finalists and semi-finalists, chosen from over 2,500 screenplays, were announced this morning (01/02/12) on the Zoetrope website.

In 2011, Calvin & Skye received the BlueCat Fellini International Screenwriting Award from screenwriter and BlueCat founder Gordy Hoffman (Love Liza). (http://www.bluecatscreenplay.com/past-winners-finalists/)

Calvin & Skye charts the unlikely friendship between hypochondriac Calvin and terminally-ill teenager Skye. Comic and poignant, it is a feel good tale in the vein of Harold and Maude and Lars and the Real Girl.
