Dublin based screenwriter Fergal Rock (On Our Way, Henry & Sunny) was named a semifinalist in this year’s Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Competition with his screenplay Calvin & Skye. Fergal’s script was one of 146 semifinalists selected from 7,251 entries. The Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting is an international screenwriting competition established to identify and encourage talented new screenwriters. Up to five $35,000 Fellowships are awarded annually. Previous winners include Destin Cretton (Short Term 12) in 2010.
A comic drama Calvin & Skye is a character driven story that charts an unlikely friendship between a hypochondriac and a terminally ill teenager. Praised by the competition for its “rich and complex storyline” the script has subsequently attracted interest from Literary Managers and Production Companies in the US.
Calvin & Skye previously won the BlueCat Screenplay Competition in 2011, as well as being named a semi-finalist in Francis Ford Coppola’s American Zoetrope Screenplay Contest (top 27 screenplays) the same year.
