In June 2007, Greendale Community School was the first state school in Ireland to be closed. Documentary filmmaker Aoibheann O’Sullivan went to the school in Kilbarrack to film in February 2007, initially intending to make a 10-minute creative documentary using the sounds of the empty corridors and shots of the empty classrooms. However, after talking to the staff of the school she decided there was another story to be told. The one-hour documentary film Greendale, Death of a School is about the staff who worked together to keep the school running up until the final day.
