May at RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre is full of the joys of dance with an exciting Gallery collaboration between RUA RED, Create and Dublin Dance Festival taking place, as well as an accompanying programme of dance workshops, films and talks.
Without by Rosemary Lee, will be shown in Gallery one and is a spectacular celebration of the city of Derry and her inhabitants – a panorama of 400 people from tea-dancers to skateboarders captured as they glide through the city streets, regardless of real or imagined boundaries. This unique and hauntingly beautiful video installation, presented on seven screens, is the culmination of a year-long collaboration between choreographer, artist and film-maker Rosemary Lee and Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company. The resulting video projection, filmed in 2013 from the city walls, becomes an intimate portrait of the city accompanied by a specially commissioned score from Graeme Miller.
Julia Carruthers, Director of Dublin Dance Festival says “Dublin Dance Festival is very pleased to be collaborating with RUA RED and Create to bring the Without installation to Dublin.  Choreographer Rosemary Lee and Echo Echo Dance Theatre’s work on this installation, featuring over 350 citizens, is very unusual and special  – and it was a much enjoyed highlight of the Derry-Londonderry City of Culture 2013 programme and the beautiful gallery space in Tallaght will show it off perfectly.”
Patrick Fox of Create says “It’s terrific to be part of this exciting initiative with DDF and RUA RED bringing the work of Rosemary Lee to Irish audiences. Lee’s commitment to collaboration and participation allows us to re consider who gets to dance and where dance can take place. Create supports collaborative arts across all artforms.”

In Gallery two, Dance With Camera focuses on short dance film pieces exploring the relationship between the camera and the choreographers and dancers who make dance for film.  This charming exhibition includes further works from Rosemary Lee as well as screenings of a selection of the 12 shorts from RTÉ’s Dance on the Box series commissioned in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

Karen Phillips, Executive Director of RUA RED says “We are delighted to have partnered with Create and Dublin Dance Festival on this innovative programme of Dance exhibitions as well as the celebration of both of our anniversaries – Dublin Dance Festival’s tenth and RUA RED’s fifth. We look forward to continuing to provide a platform for dance in Dublin into the future.”
Without and Dance With Camera run from May 2nd until May 31st.
The 10th Dublin Dance Festival takes place in venues throughout Dublin from 20 – 31 May 2014, bringing the very best of international and Irish dance to audiences in Dublin. Inaugurated in 2002, Dublin Dance Festival has become the leading dance event on the Irish arts calendar. Full 2014 programme on sale now on
