Guest curators Allison and Tiffany Anders visit this year’s festival adding a strong music strand to the programme, which includes Oscar nominee ‘20 Feet from Stardom’
A series of music films chosen by acclaimed American film director Allison Anders and her daughter Tiffany Anders will create the core of an exciting musical strand as part ofthe Jameson Dublin International Film Festival 2014. 20 Feet From Stardom, an intimate portrait of the lives of backing singers, was announced today as an Oscar nominee in the Documentary Feature category and will also screen at the festival.
A personal account of Beatlemania; the brilliant story of a Dublin punk in California; and a special screening of Dawn of the Dead with a world premiere of a live score by Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin are among other highlights for music fans at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival this February.
The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival runs at venues throughout Dublin from 13th to 23rd February 2014. The Guest Curator slot is just one element of the festival programme, full details of which will be announced on 20th January. Over 130 films, a host of famous faces, innovative masterclasses and new workshops create the programme for the twelfth year of the festival.
Guest curators Allison and Tiffany Anders, founders of the Don’t Knock the Road Festival in LA, have put together a fascinating series of music films for this year’s festival. The documentaries include intimate portraits of music icons including ‘80s indie pop star Lawrence, LA collective Wrecking Crew, the real-life inspiration behind ‘The Partridge Family’ and legendary member of the Melbourne punk scene Rowland Howard.
Award-winning writer and director Allison Anders’ films include Sugar Town, Gas Food Lodging and Mi Vida Loca (My Crazy Life). Currently Professor of Film and Media Studies at UC Santa Barbara, she has received various awards including a New York Film Critics Circle Award and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Daughter Tiffany Anders is a successful solo musician, film music supervisor and radio presenter. They are the inaugural participants in the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival’s Guest Curator initiative. Allison and Tiffany Anders join the stars of some of their chosen films to discuss music documentary as a genre in a special panel discussion hosted by popular Irish music blogger Nialler9 during the festival.
Music fans have more to look forward to during the festival. Over 50 musicians including Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen were interviewed for Morgan Neville’s Oscar nominated 20 Feet From Stardom, a powerful insight into the life of a backing singer. In Good Ol’ Freda, The Beatles’ secretary Freda Kelly shares never-before-told stories of her time with the band. Dublin punk Reb Kennedy’s music dream took him to California in 1977, and the delightful Los Wild Ones tells his story.
A special not-to-be-missed event taking place in The Sugar Club on February 21st is the world premiere of Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin performing the live score to their soundtrack of George A Romero’s classic zombie film Dawn of the Dead. Following the performance, Forza Italo DJs will take to the decks, playing tracks from the golden age of Italo-disco, giallo soundtracks and synth music of the late 70s and early 80s.
The Jameson Dublin International Film Festival 2014 will open with the Irish premiere of John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary on Thursday 13th February. A key annual event in Dublin’s cultural calendar, it brings the best of Irish and international film to audiences, positioning Dublin as the city of ‘Film in February’.
