Call For: Work Experience Opportunities in Northern Ireland

Role Responsibility

These placements provide a “taster” experience of working within the BBC and broadcasting industry. It is aimed at individuals who want to work in the media and would like to find out more about the range of jobs potentially available. Candidates will have the opportunity to see television and radio production at first hand. Candidates will have the chance to spend time with those who produce and co-ordinate the output as well as the craft specialists who capture and post-produce it, along with the staff that provide engineering and IT support across all aspects of programme making and transmission.

The placement may involve spending time at outside broadcasts, single camera shoots, studio recordings or in edit or graphic design suites and will give candidates a good overview of the various aspects of both television and radio production.

Please note that some days might start early or finish late.

The Ideal Candidate

We’re looking for applicants with a demonstrable interest in either Radio or Television programme making and broadcasting.

Candidates should have good interpersonal and communication skills, be creative, adaptable and highly motivated. The ability to work well in a busy team is crucial. As well as needing an interest in broadcasting, candidates should have an awareness of BBC Northern Ireland and its local output.

Programme-making can be hectic and unpredictable and applicants should be confident that they will work well in such an environment.  Candidates should be prepared to ask lots of questions and contribute ideas.

Background/Experience

We welcome applicants from all educational backgrounds.  Candidates do not need to have a media qualification to apply but should be able to demonstrate their passion and genuine interest in broadcasting.

We have placements available in the following areas:

Foyle

Connecting with BBC Radio Foyle (Foyle) – Successful candidates may spend time shadowing the staff working across various radio programmes in BBC Radio Foyle, from news to entertainment. Candidates may see the work that goes on behind the scenes and how each programme is produced.

Radio Foyle Production-  Successful candidates may get to work with the various programme teams where they can contribute to the production of the various radio shows, come up with ideas, carry out research, conduct vox pops and possible interviews, and even get yourself on air.

Belfast

Irish Language Unit (over 18’s only) – Successful candidates may get to work with the Irish language radio teams primarily, preparing for the live show each evening gaining experience in research, setting up guest contributors and editing skills with the possibility of going out on location recording.

Marketing, Communications and Audiences (over 18’s only) – Successful candidates will be offered placements within the following 4 departments

Communications- May include writing copy for press releases and programme Information.

Audience Research- May include analysis of media data systems and report on across TV, Radio and Online.
Brand Marketing- May include on and off-air marketing of BBC NI content.

Creative Marketing- May include researching content material, editing, assisting on shoots and some graphics work.

Connecting with BBCNI (over 18’s only)- Successful candidates may get an opportunity to experience the world of Broadcasting and within programme making. During your placement you may spend time with the people who create, direct, produce and co-ordinate the output as well as the craft specialists who capture and post-produce it.

Technology Operations (Open to under 18’s) – Successful candidates may have the opportunity to observe the many aspects of support in broadcast technology including work in Maintenance, IT, News Operations and Technology Support Centre.
