The 8th Dingle International Film Festival has, this week, unrolled details of its programme of short films. Gathered together under the title ‘Telling Stories’  it features the cream of  storytelling from both home and abroad.

The festival, which last year broke its own box office records, has since its inception supported filmmakers of all stripes, but has especially set out to encourage those working in the short format.  This applies particularly to people writing and producing Irish language films within the festival’s Físín screenwriting competition (deadline is extended to Jan 24th). This year’s extensive catalogue will be presented in high definition format at  the town’s St. James’ Church, which is over 200 years old. The screenings will be further enhanced by the use of surround sound audio and other high-end applications.

Meanwhile, other venues around town will host a galaxy of feature films and events. These will include An Lab  the local dedicated Irish language arts centre and The Blasket Centre in Dún Chaoin, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and the Blasket Islands. An interesting historical contrast will be struck at the town’s Phoenix Cinema one of this country’s last independent houses, which will also be a co-host.  Recently  refurbished and now using Dolby sound and digital projection, when it was opened in 1937 the Italian projectors were run on energy provided by burning turf.

Set to run from Friday 14th March to Monday 17th March the festival plans to build on its 2013 audience figures, which were a personal best for the Dingle IFF and its Director Maurice Galway who said,

“There are many elements which make for a successful boutique film festival like ours. Not the least of these is the presentation of short films. This year we have work submitted by new film makers and by veterans of the business.”

He added,

“ All of the forty-three films are telling stories, They originate from locations ranging from Belgium to Ballybunion and derive from a variety of cultures while  portraying many facets of human experience.”
