Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (BSÉ/IFB) have announced the latest successful Reality Bites teams. This short documentary scheme aims to encourage experimentation and the realisation of fresh approaches to non-fiction filmmaking. The following three teams have been awarded funding for their projects:
Breaking News to be directed by Paul Quinn and Tom Burke, written by Paul Quinn, and produced by Shane Hogan for Areaman Productions
This character-based documentary explores the personal stories of the newspaper vendors of Dublin’s streets, who, despite being emblazoned with sensationalist headlines, remain anonymous as we pass by. This filmmaking team worked on Reality Bites shorts The Fisherman in 2011 and There’s No Charge for the Hat in 2013, as well as the programme In Bed with the Irish for RTÉ Television, among many other projects.
Cold Hands, Warm Heart to be produced by Heather Mills, directed by Ben Jones and written by Jason Kane for Beochan
This film takes an affectionate look back at the GAA sport of handball, against the backdrop of the creation and subsequent dereliction of countless outdoor alleys in both urban and rural Ireland. Ben Jones is an experienced DoP, having worked on features like Breaking Spain, City Slackers and Rain, as well as many TV programmes and music videos. Producer Heather Mills has a background as a line producer and production manager. Her credits include Niko 2: Little Brother, Big Trouble and Igam Ogam 2.
7th Daughter of a 7th Daughter to be written and directed by Narayan Van Maele and produced by Nodlag Houlihan for Zucca Films
This observational documentary follows Agnes Padden, a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter who has the power to cure ringworm and several skin disorders, and captures the fading Irish tradition of “The Cure”. Narayan Van Maele is a DoP and photographer whose credits include the documentaries Dawn of a New Day and Voices of Mercy and the short film Baby Love. Nodhlag Houlihan has produced BSÉ/IFB-funded films including Alia, Blue Rinse and Downpour.
The Reality Bites shorts are funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (BSÉ/IFB) and are set to premiere at IFI Stranger Than Fiction 2014.
