To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Bob Quinn’s documentary Atlantean screens tomorrow, 11th July at the Galway Film Fleadh A quartet of documentary films, Atlantean, in conjunction with his book, The Atlantean Irish: Ireland’s Oriental and Maritime Heritage, outlined Bob Quinn’s theories that dismissed the popular Celtic origins of Ireland as myth. He suggests that we are instead part of a wider Atlantic culture.

The principle is that the sea does not divide peoples, it unites all countries and human beings. An Irish identity that relies on oral tradition, song, folklore, poetry, ballads, sea-shanties, even mythology, is no less valid than that of written history. A huge amount of human experience – the maritime dimension – has been paid less attention than it should, and Atlantean attempts to explore this dimension to see what it can teach us of contemporary Ireland.

Bob Quinn’s documentaries have won a string of awards over the years and have been met with international acclaim.
