Director Rossella De Venuto will host the world premiere of her physiological thriller, House of Shadows (Controra), at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh. Dublin-based Ripple World Pictures co-produced the feature with Rome’s Interlinea Films and Milan-based Barter SPA. Irish actress Fiona Glascott (The Duel) plays Megan, who inherits an ancient Italian palazzo where sinister shadows from the past reappear. Irish cinematographer Ciarán Tanham (Raw, A Kiss For Jed) is the director of photography, while other key Irish crew include sound recordist Conor O’Toole (Albert Nobbs), boom operator Noel Quinn (The Tudors) and focus puller Ron Coe (The Other Side of Sleep).

Director Rossella de Venuto, speaking to Film Ireland, said : “Having the film at the Galway Film Fleadh means a lot to me – I am a fan of Irish ghost stories, and came to Ireland for my honeymoon to stay in old haunted Irish estate houses. This film is a cultural encounter between Ireland and Italy, where ghosts have their role and I am thrilled to present it here in Galway.”

There is a Southern Italian legend that at mid-day, when the sun is directly overhead and at its hottest point, it is unsafe to go outside because your soul could be taken by the shadows. When Megan and her husband Leo travel to Italy to settle the will of Leo’s uncle Monsignor Domenico, a powerful Catholic priest famed for miracles, they are surprised to inherit an ancient family home. After deciding to stay, disturbing events lead to an unsolved mystery. Megan faces a terrifying life and death struggle against powerful forces intent on keeping the truth hidden at all costs.
