Irish actress Ella Connolly wins Best Actor award for Eliot & Me at the Dream Fest International Film Festival for Children and Youth in the Romanian town of Slatina. Jury members described Connolly’s performance in Irish children’s film Eliot & Me as “very mature and convincing”.
Connolly (13) who was present at the closing gala on Sunday night said she was delighted to win the prize. Connolly was in competition with young actors in films from Russia, Italy, Tunisia, Croatia, Korea, Romania, South Africa, Turkey and Norway. On receiving the award, Connolly said, “It’s cool that kids in Romania like the film.”
The children’s adventure drama tells the story of 10 year old Lucy who struggles to come to terms with her parents’ separation. She rescues a dog, Eliot, from the local dog shelter. It is love at first sight and her life starts to improve. But tragedy strikes when Eliot goes missing and Lucy must undertake a dangerous journey to find him.
Fintan Connolly (Flick) directs his daughter Ella Connolly (Wake Wood), IFTA Best Actress winner Renée Weldon (Trouble With Sex), David Wilmot (The Guard), Gerard Mannix Flynn (Trouble With Sex), Vincent McCabe (Game of Thrones) and newcomers Des FitzGerald, Joshua Brown and Lauren Stone.
It was produced by Fiona Bergin for Fubar Films with the backing of the Irish Film Board and RTÉ. It was photographed by cinematographer Owen McPolin (Da Vinci’s Demons) and scored by composer Stephen Rennicks (What Richard Did).
The film has been popular on the festival circuit and has screened in the Czech Republic, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Finland, Greece and the US in recent months. The film also picked up an audience award at the festival.
