Kerry Film Festival selected as Finalist for Community Awards

Kerry Film Festival is delighted to learn that it has been selected as a Finalist for the Kerry Community Awards 2013 in the Community Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht category. The Kerry Community Awards Initiative aims to recognise, reward and encourage the efforts of the community and voluntary sector, which works to improve the social, economic, cultural and environmental quality of life in our local communities.

Kerry Film Festival is proud of its strong community role and over the past 12 years it has become a vital element of Kerry’s cultural landscape, offering a unique film experience to the local community. KFF prides itself on being a film organization for the whole county with screenings taking place in Tralee, Listowel, Dingle, Waterville, Killarney and Kenmare. In addition, KFF operates other year-round community and education initiatives such as the KFF education programme aimed at primary, secondary and third level students. Overall, the education and outreach initiatives put in place by KFF embrace the principles of good community engagement and development: inclusion, ownership, empowerment, lifelong learning and access.

Kerry Film Festival’s inclusion in the list of Finalists is in recognition of the success of its Silver Screenings initiative.

Silver Screenings is a community initiative which is part of KFF’s extensive Education and Outreach Programme. The project has proven to be one of the most successful outreach activities for KFF, allowing people who would not otherwise visit the cinema or any cultural event due to health and mobility reasons, an opportunity to watch quality classic films every month as well as enjoy the social aspect of coming to Siamsa Tire and chatting about the film over tea and biscuits. To date, 3,500 people countywide have attended this film programme.

The final adjudication for the Kerry Community Awards 2013 will take place later in the month. Category winners and the overall winner will be announced at the Community Awards Luncheon, April 14th at the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney.
