The full Galway Film Fleadh programme will be announced in mid June.
The application process is simple: Applicants write and submit a 500-word story idea for screen. All received applications are then read by a panel selected from the Irish film industry – and the best five are shortlisted. The five writers are contacted and invited to present their pitch to a panel of judges. This takes place in front of an audience on the Sunday of the Galway Film Fleadh.
In addition to the prize money the real benefits of this venture are multifarious. The invitation to simply get an idea down on paper in 500 words inspires so many people (many of whom have no experience of the film industry) who have long harboured an ambition to commit their idea to paper. For many writers, it has afforded them a chance to practice the craft of pitching. For those selected, it is a golden opportunity: to communicate their story; to bolster their confidence and to provide the first opportunity for them to win the crowd. As for the winner, the prize can allow them the time to develop and expand their pitch into a full feature film script, as was the case with Will Collins and My Brothers.
