Report: the Zebbie Awards

| May 13, 2012 | Comments (0)

The great and good were out to honour the best of Irish talent in writing at the 5th Annual Irish Playwrights and Screenwriters Awards. Named after O.Z. Whitehead, the ‘Zebbies’ award Irish writers of theatre, film, short film, TV and radio. The night’s proceedings began with an educational speech on the history of Ireland’s screenwriters. Interspersed with grainy clips taken from the IFI Archive, the speech covered the beginnings of the film industry in Ireland and the screenwriter’s input with it. This was soon followed by the always-entertaining Senator David Norris and his trademark witticisms; the best of which was undoubtedly the following, ‘What’s the difference between pizza and a screenwriter? A pizza can feed a family’ – which, surprisingly, went over extremely well with the audience of writers. Regardless of this light-hearted barb, each of the winners received their honours with great joy and humility.
