Short Child-Solider Drama in Production

Based on the award-winning short story by Halo author Tobias Buckell,
All Her Children Fought will go into production in Rathdrum, Wicklow
over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Directed by Patrick Ryan, the 15
minute drama explores the corruption and resilience of natural
instincts in a future state of war. ‘The story has great resonance’
said Snugboro Films producer Liam Grant, ‘it deals with the forgotten
details – how children grow up and how mothers cope rather than the
spectacle of war on TV.’

For his part, the US-based author proved highly approachable and even
collaborated on a draft of the script. ‘I was apprehensive about
contacting him at first –especially when I saw his name on the New
York Times Bestseller list’, said Liam, ‘but I was determined to see
this story filmed and I knew we had the right team of people to do a
good job.’

At the helm of the 17-person crew director Patrick Ryan Patrick
rejoins cinematographer Tommy Fitzgerald and editor Conor Fitzpatrick
after their fruitful collaboration on Nemesis, For the Kids (screened
at the 2011 Galway film fleadh) and Glassjaw. Conor has also amassed a
series of awards in recent times including an IFTA as well as
nominations at the Grand Off World Film and Sundance festivals

‘Despite its future setting All Her Children Fought is essentially a
grounded drama about the psychological weight of war,’said Patrick.
‘Sadly the use and indoctrination of child soldiers is a fact of many
wars today. This story is a projection of that reality.’

For art director Elizabeth Parsons, the challenge is to create an
authentic looking vintage future. ‘A period piece comes with preset
props and wardrobe’, notes Elizabeth, ‘those restrictions are removed
here but with the freedom there is an added challenge to make it look
believable.’ The striking 18th century house in Rathdrum has, she
believes, the right balance of historical gravitas and timelessness
for the story.

All Her Children Fought features a cast of three with original music
by Alex Ryan.
