Filmbase’s Short Film Night ShortSpace to focus on Music Videos this Month!
ShortSpace Focus on Music Videos 7pm, Thursday 3rd November 2011
This month ShortSpace is taking a look at the music video in all its glory! Music videos have long been a great way for up-and-coming filmmakers to make their mark and to experiment (just think of film directors such as Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, and Mark Romanek who all honed their skills making music videos). We’re keen to look at the range of videos being made here in Ireland at the moment and will be talking to a number of filmmakers filming these creative vids on next to nothing budgets!
Joining us on the night will be directors Simon Eustace who has created videos for bands such as The Coronas, Sleep Thieves and Miracle Bell and Mike Ahern from Team D.A.D.D.Y. who have directed numerous videos for bands such as Bloc Party, Jape and Super Furry Animals. Simon Eustace
Having completed his arts degree in Trinity College Dublin, Simon toured Ireland and Europe with his band, “The Chapters” then he returned to college to study film production and direction. Handily, this then meant that he was able to direct music videos for “The Chapters”. (Bet the record label were well chuffed with that.)
He’s pretty much been directing shorts and music videos ever since, and is now also working in commercials. Simon’s most recent accolades include winner of best video at the Bray Music Video Festival for his direction of the music video for “The Coronas”, he was also nominated for four awards at the first ever IMTV awards, including for best Director, Best video of the year, and best original concept.
His sort film, The Perils of Internet Dating (watch it on YouTube HERE) has featured on the front page of YouTube in numerous countries.
Simon’s background as a musician and filmmaker means he’ll be able to offer a unique insight from both points-of-view into the pros and cons of making music videos!
D.A.D.D.Y.
‘Youngish’ men Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman direct together under the name D.A.D.D.Y. D.A.D.D.Y. started as a graphic design and animation collaboration, but they quickly moved on to direct both animated and live action short films, music videos, and TV commercials. Their music video work in particular has gathered a cult following both in Ireland and abroad. Mike and Enda have been invited to talk and showcase their work in the National Film Theatre in London, as well as to speak to filmmakers and designers in Copenhagen, Dublin, Limerick & Belfast. They have directed high profile music videos for many bands; more recently Bloc Party, Jape and Super Furry Animals. Along the way they have been nominated for the ‘best new director’ award at the UK Music Video awards in 2008 as well as D&AD award for their music video work.
2009 saw the release of the Irish Film Board funded and awarding winning short film Mr. Foley which Mike and Enda wrote and directed. Mr. Foley has toured the festival circuit and picked up many awards along the way including: Best Short Film: San Francisco United Short Film Festival; Melies D’or Nomination & Audience Prize: Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival; Best Overall Film: Fastnet Short Film Festival and Best ‘Soundscape’ Award: Dresden International Short Film Festival.
The Hatch is their second short which will premiere at the Corona Cork Film Festival in November 2011 and they hope to start a new sub-genre, pompously describing the film as a ‘poetic sci-fi’.
They are currently in development on their first feature film currently titled Bogman King. You can see much of D.A.D.D.Y’s work to date on www.teamdaddy.com.
The format for the night is same as always, a short screening of work by the filmmakers attending will kick off at 7pm followed directly by a Q&A with the filmmakers involved. Tickets for the session are a mere €5 for Filmbase members and €8 for non-members and can be bought on the door.
