TG4 has recently announced the launch of a new development scheme, Scéal, which offers talented new Irish-speaking writers/directors an opportunity to adapt a well-known story from Irish language literature or folklore towards a half hour short film. The chosen story can be adapted from an Irish language short story, poem, folklore or any work that represents the Irish tradition of storytelling. Successful applicants will be given the opportunity to develop the story from the basic script to the eventual production and broadcast stage.

Previous schemes, Síol and Údar, have seen 12 half hour short films produced for TG4. Síol provided an opportunity for six novice writers and directors to develop new pieces of work under the tutelage of experts in both script writing and television directing. Through mentoring and a series of project based workshops Síol guided writers through each of the stages from script to production, resulting in the development of their skills and also six high quality, well crafted new television dramas. The following year Údar achieved a similar result based on adaptations of six classic Irish short stories.

The scheme is open to Irish language writers from all over the country, whether they have screen experience or not, and to directors who wish to gain experience in television drama through Irish. All applicants will need to have a proficiency in the Irish language.

The successful applicants will develop their scripts over a series of workshops with guidance from a professional script editor.

Tá sé fógraithe ag TG4 go bhfuil tús curtha le scéim fhorbatha nua, Scéal. Tugann Scéal deis do thallann nua scríbhneoirí/stiúrthóirí le Gaeilge, saothar aitheanta ó litríocht nó béaloideas na Gaeilge a athchóiriú don teilifís agus a thabhairt ó chéim bhun scripte go céim an chraolta.  Is féidir an bun scéal a roghnú as gearr scéal, dán, scéal béaloideas nó aon saothar a léiríonn scéalaíocht na Gaeilge.

Ar an dá scéim a léiríodh roimhe seo, Síol agus Údar, bhí 12 gearr scannáin léirithe do TG4.  Thug Síol deis do sheisear scríbhneoirí agus stiúrthóirí píosaí nua oibre a fhorbairt faoi theagascóirí saineolaithe i scríbhneoireacht scripteanna agus i stiúradh teilifíse araon. Trí shraith ceardlanna tionscnamh-bhunaithe, threoraigh Síol na scríbhneoirí trí gach céim ón script go dtí an léiriúchán, rud a d’fhorbair a gcuid scileanna agus a chuir sé dhráma nua teilifíse ar fáil go healaíonta agus ar ardchaighdeán.  An bhliain dár gcionn bhain Údar amach toradh den chineál céanna le hathchóirithe ar shé ghearrscéal chlasaiceacha Gaeilge.

Tá an scéim seo ag TG4 oscailte do scríbhneoirí Gaeilge ó cheann ceann na tíre, bíodh taithí scáileáin acu nó ná bíodh, agus do stiúrthóirí ar mhian leo taithí a fháil ar dhrámaíocht teilifíse i nGaeilge. Réamhriachtanas a bheidh i gceist do gach rannpháirtí go mbeidís líofa sa Ghaeilge agus in ann páirt a ghlacadh trí Ghaeilge i ngach leibhéal agus céim den scéim.

As na hiarratais ar fad roghnófar gearrliosta scríbhneoirí le freastal ar cheardlanna ceirde, faoi stiúir eagarthóra scripte, ag a ndéanfar forbairt bhreise ar gach togra.

Is féidir gach eolas faoi Scéal a fháil ar suíomh TG4; www.tg4.ie/sceal
