There are few more enticing prospects in the current cinematic calendar than a new film by Terrence Malick, and this month the IFI will be marking the opening of Cannes prize-winner The Tree of Life with screenings of the director’s earlier work. A new Malick film offers rarity value (he is amongst the least prolific of modern masters) and the promise of something unique, for Malick is an American filmmaker like no other.
