Full line up for Chinese Film Festival announced
Dublin Chinese New Year Festival, celebrating the Year of the Rabbit in 2011, is delighted to launch a new innovative festival for Dublin. The Chinese Film Festival will screen 12 movies over seven days, starting Friday, 4th February, at the IFI. The closing film on Sunday, 13th February will be a unique World Premiere event at the Screen Cinema.
The Festival will showcase the very best of contemporary Chinese film. China has firmly established itself as a powerhouse in film-making and its production rate now, in terms of quality and quantity, is fast gaining on that produced annually in Hollywood. However, too few Chinese films gain a release in this country; Ireland’s first Chinese Film Festival, therefore, addresses that problem.
Among the many award-winning films showing are ‘Ip Man’ and ‘Ip Man 2′ – the latter a European Premiere; ‘Apart Together’, winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the 2010 Berlin Film Festival; Chen Kaige’s ‘Forever Enthralled’ and the record box-office hit ‘Aftershock’, an epic tragedy about the Tangshan earthquake of 1976.
The festival will close on Sunday, 13th February with the World Premiere of ‘Blood Oath’, an historical epic about rivalry, lust and betrayal in 206 BC, starring the great Gong Li. The director, Stephen Shin will introduce the film and take part in a Q & A after the screening.
Films will be divided between the IFI and the Screen Cinema. There will also be screenings in Galway and Cork.
On Friday, 4th February, a special animation seminar will take place at Dublin City Council’s Wood Quay Conference Centre. Taking part will be Ireland’s Oscar-nominated companies, Brown Bag Films and Cartoon Saloon, and a number of leading animators from China. Tickets are free, and can be reserved at www.eventelephant.com/dcnyfanimationseminar
