Irish Horror 'Spiderhole' to Screen in Kerry and Cork
Irish independent horror ‘Spiderhole’ will screen at Tralee Omniplex and Killarney Cineplex on Thursday, 25th November at 8 pm with further screenings on the biggest screen at Cork’s Gate Cinema on Friday, 26th November and Saturday, 27th November at 11.45 pm.
‘Spiderhole’ is an independent movie set in London but largely shot in Kerry, which follows four art students who go in search of an abandoned house in which to live rent free as squatters.
Writer and director Daniel Simpson’s previous project starring Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany was announced on the front page of Variety magazine back in June 2007 but ran into difficulties in pre-producton. Daniel turned his attention to another script he had written, ‘Spiderhole’, with Patrick O’Neill from Ballyheigue, County Kerry coming on board as producer.
Funding was raised privately and locally with executive producers Alan and Joanne O’Sullivan becoming involved early in the film’s development and alongside Kevin Hannafin they played a pivotal role in ensuring that the movie was completed.
Jason Cooper, drummer from ‘The Cure’, composed the score for the movie with new Irish talent Kieran Calvert and Alan Sheehan (Echoshell), and Sophie Coyle also composing original songs.
The principle cast were from London with crew from Toronto. ‘Spiderhole’ was the first feature film to be shot in Ireland using the Red One camera, ‘Savage’ began shooting using the same camera four months later.
Speaking at the film’s premiere at London’s Empire Theatre, Leicester Square on October 29th, producer Patrick O’Neill said “A lot of talented individuals living and working in Kerry offered their time and services lending professional resources to draw from. Brian Nolan’s (FAS TV Production Lecturer) incomparable expertise and knowledge in the field of digital media, George Doyle’s photographic excellence, the FAS Television Production students for that year were all on hand to lend support on this 19 day shoot in Kerry, followed by a four day shoot on the streets of London.”
‘Spiderhole’ was shot on a micro-budget and has secured a theatrical release in the UK and Ireland through Soda Pictures with deals pending in Canada, North American and Germany.
