Young Critic Lucy Richards-Smyrk Reviews 'Tooth Fairy'

The Rock

DIR: Michael Lembeck • WRI: Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel, Joshua Sternin, Jeffrey Ventimilia, Randi Mayem Singer • PRO: Jason Blum, Mark Ciardi, Gordon Gray• DOP: David Tattersall • ED: David Finfer • CAST: Dwayne Johnson, Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews, Stephen Merchant, Billy Crystal

Dwayne Johnson (Derek Thompson-Tooth Fairy), Julie Andrews (Lily-Tooth Fairy Queen), Stephen Merchant (Tracy- no-winged Fairy Assistant), Ashley Judd (Carly-Mother), Chase Ellison (Randy-Son) and Destiny Whitlock (Tess-Daughter).
Dwayne Johnson plays Derek Thompson a mean, ex-hot shot, ice hockey player who doesn’t believe in fair play. But when his heart breaking skills go too far things get a little wobbly.

You will cry your eyes out with laughter as you see a macho ice hockey player get turned into a flying, fluffy winged, tight wearing, tooth collecting fairy who has to learn a lesson or two about trust, magic, tights, amnesia dust and believing. In the middle of all this he also has to impress his girlfriend Carly’s son Randy that he is the perfect dad, which he is, of course, anything but.

As a young man Derek Thompson became very famous as an ice hockey player but when he gets into a small accident and hurts his shoulder he loses hope and with that the meaning and importance of the game. He then just starts knocking the other players around before being sin binned; so as children start wanting to be like him he tells them just to forget it and stop believing. By the end of the film he has to learn that fame isn’t about money or fans, it’s about love and doing the thing that you like best and never letting that ideal go, because if you do you will never experience the true meaning of life and happiness.

The main cast of Johnson with Ashley Judd, Chase Ellison playing the girlfriend and son are helped by Disney favourite Julie Andrews and an interesting Stephen Merchant. The main characters were cast well. My favourite three were Randy (son), Tess (daughter) and Tracy (bulgy-eyed tooth assistant) who could have been a reject from a horror movie rather than a kid flick and kind of creeped me out. Although there was a lady sitting behind us at our cinema and her laugh made me even more creeped out. These were helped along the way by Hollywood royalty Julie Andrews and Billy Crystal.

This film teaches children (and adults) to always follow their dreams, and to believe and have faith that you can achieve and do anything. It was all the things I like funny, fairies, fantasy, cute boys, with my favourite actors and actresses and hit the top of my chart (tying with AVATAR).

The directing by Michael Lembeck, who has previously worked with more fairies and magical creatures in The Santa Claus 2 and 3, was great and the visual effects were good but didn’t get in the way of the script which even made my mum laugh(which was even better).

If any kids are looking for a hilarious macho fantasy film this is a perfect fit which is why I would give it 10/10 and definitely recommend it to all ages. So get your ice skates on and slide through a film that brings joy and laughter to children and even adults and is also filled with fun, friendship, fairies, talent, tights and teeth.
THE TOOTH FAIRY IS THE PERFECT FAMILY FILM. (OH YEAH)
