Special guests announced for IFI German Film Festival
The oppressive history of Nazi Germany in the 1930s is faced head-on in the Gala Opening Film Berlin 36. The film tells the neglected story of the German/Jewish high-jumper Gretel Bergmann who was denied access to the Olympics, only to be replaced by a transvestite athlete. Producer Tim Rostock will discuss the film after the screening and will attend the post-screening reception.
A more recent chapter of Germany’s troubled history is explored by director Connie Walthers. She will discuss her film Long Shadows, a film that is part philosophical drama and part revenge thriller about the daughter of a man killed by the Red Army Faction terrorists.
Two documentary filmmakers will also introduce their films – both stories of identity and integration in modern Germany. Director Jens Junker and his producer Tobias Walker will discuss their film Alias about a German with hidden Lebanese origins. Director Thomas Lauterbach will be discussing his film Bastion of Sin about a devout Muslim housewife taking part in a community production of Medea – an exceedingly intelligent discussion about religion, oppression and sex.
