Issue 129 – Rigging it

Ever wondered what a ‘creature technical director’ gets up to on a daily basis? Greg Maguire of Industrial Light & Magic (the visual effects company founded by George Lucas) gives us a day in the life.
06:30 – Up out of bed. If I get in before 8 am I can leave at 6 pm. We’re just a few weeks into a new project, so the hours haven’t kicked in yet as we ramp up. I expect they will shortly, though.
07:00 – Read email while eating my porridge. I started porridge about six months ago and still love it.
07:30 – Hop on my bike and head to work. I’ve been cycling to work since I went back to ILM in November. It’s not far away at five miles, but it’s a bit hilly, it being San Francisco.
08:00 – Grab a coffee and hit my desk. I keep my ‘to do’ book open at my desk. I find it helps to put all my thoughts down on paper and get them out of my head. That way I’m not constantly trying to remember stuff. Being the nerd that I am, I’ve tried numerous electronic devices for this but nothing has beaten paper yet. Email Matt Chapman, the newly appointed animation assistant technical director, to ask for a meeting. He’s working on a new animation transfer tool that may be beneficial for the crowd shots on our show.
