Irish audiences are to be given a sample of Ukrainian cinema with a week-long festival presented by the Irish Film Institute and the Embassy of the Ukraine in Ireland. The Festival will take place 19–25 September in the IFI.
The Ukraine has been tipped to be the next Eastern European international success story after the explosion of interest in Romanian cinema. The festival will be presenting some earlier work (the 1960s ‘Poetic Cinema’) but will also showcase the new generation such as Oles Sanin (Mamay) and Roman Balayan (Birds of Paradise).
The festival will open on Friday 19th attended by Hanna Chmil, Head of the State Cinema Unit and the makers of the opening film, Awesome Tale, Olena Fetisova and Roman Shyrman, who will take part in a Q&A session following the film’s screening.
